EQ in Exclusive Conversation with Mr. Prateek Sharma, Leader – Key Accounts (India) – Sungrow https://www.eqmagpro.com/eq-in-exclusive-conversation-with-mr-prateek-sharma-leader-key-accounts-india-sungrow/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=eq-in-exclusive-conversation-with-mr-prateek-sharma-leader-key-accounts-india-sungrow Mon, 17 Oct 2022 06:18:37 +0000 https://www.eqmagpro.com/?p=296012

Verbatim of Sungrow

 1. 1 How many inverters have you supplied to India till now and what are your expectations or targets for this year and the coming year?

As of now we have already completed around 14 GW in India and our target is to achieve more than 35% market share and as of now what we have seen is that India has achieved 8-10 GW in a year. Next year also we are expecting 9 to 11 GW depending on what will happen in India accordingly. We are expecting our market share in India to be more than 35% for inverters included along with utility, C&I and everything.

 1. 2 Could you tell us about the road map in terms of price, technology, etc ?

This is the first time we have seen in the last decade that the pricing of inverters is on the upper side and this is because of the crunch in semiconductor shortage or other raw materials price rise. In terms of technology, we have been in the leading position every time by introducing the new inverters on the higher side like we did in the past also, we introduced 2.5 MW of solution then 3.125 and 5 MW of solution and now 1+X Modular design central inverter, then in string inverters also we introduced 200 KW of solution and now the latest one 320KW is the largest string inverter model we launched. Being Technology experts, we have always been closer to customers’ demand and always tried to supply what the customer demands. In future also there are various aspects in which our R&D is working on and that is on a conceptual basis that is like entire industry is working on 1500V but on conceptual then our R&D is working on more than 1500V. For the pricing I would like to highlight that we are expecting that the current situation may go up to next year, normal situation might not come back in terms of pricing because of shortage of raw materials and if the situation is getting worse so the pricing will go on a higher side only.

 1. 3 What are the biggest challenges in India’s goal of 175 GW by 2022 and 450 GW by 2030 . How much can we really achieve by 2022, 2025 and 2030?

India is not able to achieve its 2022 Target. From the RE side, it’s somewhere around 150 GW out of which the solar part is only about 60-62 GW which is being completed by 2022. If we are going at the same pace of adding 8-10 GW a year, then it will somewhere land up around 200 GW by 2030. Then again, we will be short of the targets. The challenges in this sector are the government policies and the dependence on the imported modules, cells, etc. The government is trying to bring the initiatives like ‘Make in India’ but apart from that what we feel is that the base of such initiatives have to be prepared first like the supply chain which is the major hurdle which we have seen capacity shortfall including high price of Make in India products, raw material supply chain issues because once this complete supply chain is there then it’s easier for us to comply with the GOI policies and the clauses which GOI is trying to put in the tenders and that would be very helpful.

Q.4 Government of India has been voicing concerns of malware etc in Solar Inverters

and its possible effects. What are your thoughts?

As I mentioned that we are offering this Made in India product to the Indian markets. Our product and Sungrow equipment are not subject to any malware/ trojan or any cyber threat. No live data is being accessible to any other country except where the product is installed. Sungrow is compliant to all the standards which are there in India and we are very much open for testing in case required by the government or if it is due to necessary through the certified testing if available for the equipment.

 1. 5 What are your views on BIS and other tariff barriers?

BIS is an initiative by the government to check the quality standards but again it might not be applicable on 1500V inverters because lab/testing facilities are not there in India. BIS notification is also getting extended year by year. If it’s really meant for the inverters, then the labs and testing facilities should be available in India so these checks can happen.

If after 6 months the module pricing gets changed then viability of the tariff will not be there because modules or commodity prices as we have seen have gone ups and downs like anything, these are the major barriers which we have seen. Now that tariffs have come, it’s not possible to execute on those tariffs on current prices. That is the reason we have seen the long hold, in 3-4 months there’s no such big projects that have happened in the utility segment specifically.

 1. 6 What are you going to display in REI, are there any new products that you are going to showcase?

We are going to showcase our new inverters which we launched earlier in this year and some of our new string inverters which we have designed as per the market demands. The new addition in the family, the robotic cleaning is also going to be showcased in REI. Of course, few new launches are also there for the C&I segment that we are going to showcase in this year.

Q.7 Could you also tell us about the major milestones Sungrow has achieved in different aspects?

Major milestones Sungrow has achieved in different aspects can be that we have completed 14 GW of shipments in India. Sungrow has completed 25 years serving in RE Industry worldwide. The factory production capacity has been scaled from 3 to 10 GW. Every model that we have launched till now has a success story that is again a milestone in our basket.

Q.8 Kindly enlighten our readers on the performance of your Inverters in India in

various geographic locations, customer feedback.

We have been able to receive repeated orders from the customers. Regardless of any changes technology wise, etc will be able to gain a good market share. That is the biggest feedback which we consider from the customers.

 1. 9 Kindly comment on Energy Storage as a game changer, its technology, cost trends, etc.

Energy storage is a wide chapter. If you see, ESS is the solution for so many aspects. When we talk about renewable energy, it’s a fluctuating source of power generation, the power coming from RE is not stable, sometimes it’s high, sometimes low, and sometimes absent and hence this should either be compensated by flexible Thermal Power or by massive improvement in ESS. And so the stored energy can be passed on to maintain the stability of the grid.

 1. 10 According to the budget 2021, increased import duty as BCD on inverters in India, Do you think GOI will increase it more in near future?

So to give strength to the ‘Make In India’ initiative which GOI has planned and to give strength to Indian manufacturers. We are expecting that GOI will increase it more soon irrespective of BCD we do have plans for Make in India. We have already scaled it up from 3-10 GW. We are also planning to gain more and more verticals in the factory.

 1. 11 Could you briefly describe the various technologies and their suitable applications such as central or string inverters etc.

So we have available string inverters and we are continuously involved in the innovations as per the market requirements like we did in the past also, we introduced SG2500, 200 KW rating, etc. Now 1.1*X MW of inverters too. And in string inverters also we are continuously doing the innovations and introducing higher ratings of inverters in the market. We also provide the highest rating inverters in the market as of now. We have also launched completely outdoor inverters.

]]> EQ In Exclusive Conversation With Mr. Kaien Chang , Vice President of Technology – Oversea , Solamet – EQ Mag Pro https://www.eqmagpro.com/eq-in-exclusive-conversation-with-mr-kaien-chang-vice-president-of-technology-oversea-solamet-eq-mag-pro/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=eq-in-exclusive-conversation-with-mr-kaien-chang-vice-president-of-technology-oversea-solamet-eq-mag-pro Mon, 10 Oct 2022 05:03:59 +0000 https://www.eqmagpro.com/?p=295387

1. Could you please tell us about yourself and the company?

My name is Kaien Chang. Vice President of Technology – Oversea. In charge of R&D and technical support globally outside of China. About 18 years of experience in Thick film paste technology, 14 years in photovoltaic metallization paste.

My name is KF Wong. International Sales Director. Managing customers globally outside of China. 20 years commercial experience in the Photovoltaic industry.

We used to be well-known as DuPont Solamet® metallization paste business and now we are a brand new company called “Solamet” since 1st July, 2021, Jiangsu Suote Electronic Materials Co., Ltd. successfully acquired the entirety of DuPont Solamet® Photovoltaic Paste Business, including all of its IP portfolio, said Solamet vice president of technology-oversea Kaien Chang.

2. What is New Solamet?

New Solamet inherited the best from DuPont including R&D capability, IP coverage, global support and brand impact in the world but we are now putting everything together and focusing on only one area of expertise – The Photovoltaic Industry. This will make the new Solamet more focused, stronger and faster. For example, we used to have to have over 1 month lead time in DuPont, now it’s several days for China customers and less than 2 weeks for oversea customers, said Solamet international sales director KF Wong.

3. Could you please comment on IP protection?

Solamet vice president of technology-oversea Kaien Chang says that they have over 100 active patents and key granted patents have >10 years of remaining life. Solamet’s IP based on the Pb-Te-O frit technology is the keystone to the PV paste industry. Nearly all p-type Si solar cells today and most n-type based solar cells in ramping-up use Solamet® innovations. We hold the strongest and broadest IP portfolios in the industry and continue to take effective actions to protect our IP worldwide since it’s the fundamental to support the innovation of metallization paste and it’s so key to help the PV industry continue to boost power and lower the cost.

4. How would you comment on the global PV cell manufacturing trend? And what role Solamet can play in it?

As the trend for global carbon neutrality and the tight demand of energy from uncertainties like war, people now understand renewable energy is so critical. We are seeing every country & region would like to set up their own capacity and capability to secure energy supply including US, Europe and India. Because of this, the Solamet team can perfectly leverage our metallization experience and knowledge via a worldwide reach team with on-site support. By doing this, we can help oversea cell customers to extremely shorten their learning curve for the metallization process to achieve first tier performance at the earliest. Our dedicated team with a complete function to serve oversea customers including sales, R&D, technical service, CSR. Probably the only one paste supplier to have a technical center outside of China dedicatedly serving oversea customers. Furthermore, we have plans to set up a 2nd MFG site in Taiwan to better serve oversea customers and also mitigate the supply risk, said Solamet vice president of technology-oversea Kaien Chang.

5. New technology – is there any new offering from Solamet for new cell technology platforms like TOPCON and HJT?

Solamet vice president of technology-oversea Kaien Chang also said that 2022 is the exciting year that we saw the real booming for advanced cell technology including N TOPCon & HJT. We expected over 80 GW capacity with around 20 GW real output for N type by the end of 2022. We at Solamet continue to work with those pioneers to release the full eff. potential of N type cell. For N TOPCon front-side, Solamet provided the first N type front-side metallization commercial solution in the market back to 2016, and the first metallization paste solution to its earlier version called N PERT cells developed by Yingli. We now offer customized N TOPCon front-side paste via different frit composition and selection of Al powder in order to meet different boron doped emitter requirements to contact and passivation damage. We also provide alternative metallization solutions, such as Al-free front-side, carrier injections, selective emitter approaches, which may overcome some of the shortcomings of N TOPCon front-side. For the TOPCon rear-side, we are continuing to leverage our Pb-Te-O frit technology by tailoring its composition to control the etching of SiN without damage to the poly Si layer. For HJT, our new offering is focusing on dual printing.

Through successful Ag and vehicle innovation without using large flake Ag in our finger, our finger enables fine line and high-speed printing, which enables laydown reduction just like current p type front-side paste. It solves one of current HJT paste’s biggest issues, which is Ag paste cost. Furthermore, Solamet also completed initial technical reserve for next generation low temperature paste, which is able to be cured at 120~130degC and it had demonstrated leading performance at several customers in the application of perovskite tandem cell. Besides advanced cell structure, we also continue supporting current mainstream PERC mono FS paste development by customization for different customers especially in India since we know now it’s in a critical moment of transition from multi to PERC mono for most of India cell makers. As previously mentioned by our sales director, Solamet is probably the only one who has a dedicated R&D & technical service resource outside of China to support oversea customers.

6. What’s the view for other metallization processes like plating, laser transfer etc. vs. screen printing?

We suppose the printing process will still be mainstream for more than 5 years. It’s still possible that plating/laser transfer will be adopted for some niche market. But when we trace back the development of the PV industry, we can clearly see that Levelized cost of energy is the most important index. To achieve better LCOE, production throughput, yield is extremely critical. And I believe plating, laser transfer are not yet to approve its above two performances in the market. Not to mention there is still environmental impact concern for plating, says Kaien Chang.

7. How do you think your company is moving towards your mission?

To this Solamet vice president of technology-oversea Kaien Chang mentioned that their mission is to support continuous reduction of LCOE of solar power to achieve grid parity in order to ensure a sustainable energy future for mankind. Now we see it has been achieved in some countries/regions. And we Solamet is committed to continue to invest in the innovation of metallization technologies for eff. improvement and cost reduction no matter for p type PERC or advanced N type to achieve grid parity globally. To achieve this ultimate goal, Our company actually continues to upgrade our global teams’ capability in terms of technical support and commercial service via setting up the worldwide reach network.

EQ In Exclusive Conversation With Mr. Rahul Bhutiani , Head of Sales & Marketing , Adani Solar- EQ Mag Pro https://www.eqmagpro.com/eq-in-exclusive-conversation-with-mr-rahul-bhutiani-head-of-sales-marketing-adani-solar-eq-mag-pro/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=eq-in-exclusive-conversation-with-mr-rahul-bhutiani-head-of-sales-marketing-adani-solar-eq-mag-pro Fri, 07 Oct 2022 09:27:04 +0000 https://www.eqmagpro.com/?p=295253

1. Please brief our readers about your solar journey.

In 2017, Adani Solar became the first company in the world to start a Greenfield Project of GW scale at Mundra, with its platinum-rated manufacturing facility of 1.2 GW of Solar PV cells & Modules. This setup was enhanced to 1.5 GW in 2019. This facility has been successfully catering primarily to the Domestic Markets – Residential Rooftop projects, Groundbased IPP projects, Solar Parks, and even the Agricultural Solar Pump projects under the KUSUM scheme. Adani Solar has been a consistent performer not only in terms of volumes in manufacturing but also in terms of Market Share – consistently being the largest and the most prominent Indian Player against the onslaught of Chinese manufacturers.

Adani Solar prides itself in having created a very robust Retail Distribution Network across all states of India that ensures Adani Solar Modules reach every nook & corner. We pride ourselves in holding a 50% market share in residential retail and KUSUM markets.

In 2022, Adani Solar expanded its capacity by adding a 2 GW line. With this capacity addition, Adani Solar has brought to India the state-of-the-art, contemporary MonoPERC technology that is capable of delivering highefficiency modules thereby making Solar projects more viable. With these, Modules Adani Solar is now serving the domestic and international markets very efficiently and effectively.

Adani Solar is the only Indian manufacturer to be awarded Top Performer by DNV-GL PVEL Global Reliability Testing for five consecutive years (2018 to 2022).

2. Which are the advanced technologies that have been adopted in your products and processes? / What kind of products and new technologies you are going to launch in this or next year

The capacity expansion of 2 GW that is already done is with the latest MonoPERC Technology that is capable of giving us high-efficiency Modules. The manufacturing set-up is flexible and can work with both 182 mm and 210 mm cells thereby offering Modules in the bin range of 535 -660 Wp. We are also setting up the associated Cell line which will again be flexible and capable of manufacturing cells of 182 mm and 210 mm.

Interestingly our MonoPERC lines are also capable of being upgraded to n-type TOPCon technology thereby further enhancing the efficiency of modules we can offer to the market.

Adani Solar has also set off an expanding capacity by another 2 GW by bringing to India, the N-type TOPCon technology with its futuristic technology and is capable of further enhancing the Module efficiencies.

3. What makes your product the best fit for any kind of requirement?

At Adani Solar, our attempt has been to have better control on the supply chain – which gives us the ability to ensure the best quality of the product. We have and continue to build out integrated Cell and Module capacities. We have also set up an ancillary eco-system to ensure supply chain independence for other critical components of the Module – like Aluminum Frame, Back-sheet, POE, Glass, etc.

Adani Solar Modules are ALMM approved and have all the requisite national and International Certifications for them to be accepted for any type of deployment – Retail, Commercial, Industrial, and IPP.

4. What are your growth and expansion plans for the next couple of years?

Adani Solar will be expanding capacities with the latest Technologies. With MonoPERC technology we have 2 GW of Cell and Module capacities. We are already underway with an expansion of another 2 GW which will be based on the n-type TOPCon technology. This facility will be operational by Mid-2023. As a vision, Adani Solar intends to have, over the next few years, a fully integrated capacity of 10 GW starting from Polysilicon up to Modules.

The ancillary eco-system will also be appropriately expanded to support the 10 GW capacity. Once completed, this facility will maybe the world’s only fully integrated 10 GW Solar PV manufacturing capacity with the entire ancillary eco-system co-located.

5. How do you see India’s solar sector progressing in the next 5 years? How do you see Adani Solar contributing to the sector during this time?

We at Adani Solar, believe that the Solar industry in India is poised for an orbital change. The Government, regulators, manufacturers, the developers are working in tandem to ensure India meets its ambitious (but achievable) targets for Renewable Power.

The solar industry is capable of taking India to Energy Security while helping decarbonize the Power Generation industry in India. India is currently the 3rd largest market for Solar Industry behind China and USA, and we will continue to hold our position in near future too. The solar installations in the country are expected to grow exponentially in the next 5 years and Adani Solar is geared to support this massive growth. Adani Solar will continue to hold a dominant market share going forward too.

6. What kind of pricing and technology roadmap do you see coming through in the industry?

The industry has seen unprecedented price increases last year on the back of an all-time increase in Polysilicon prices. With a lot of new polysilicon capacities coming on stream now, it is widely expected that there would be pressure on prices, and we may soon see a downward trend in prices for the industry. This will augur well and help boost the growth in the industry.

In terms of technology, the industry is gravitating towards higher and higher module efficiency. The current favorite, MonoPERC technology will likely rule the roost over the near future. TOPCon and HJT are the technologies that are maturing very fast and will be the technologies that the world and India will work with in times to come.

7. How has the rupee devaluation affected the solar industry and your business?

The Indian solar industry is reeling under pressure created by rising raw material prices primarily driven by the Polysilicon price spurt and commodity prices surge. The World’s geo-political situation triggered rises in Crude prices and that has led to an impact on our Rupee. This devaluation has resulted in a further impact on Module prices since a lot of the raw materials are imported and lead to a very strong linkage to dollar Rupee movements

To the extent a company exports its products, there could be a natural hedge against dollar Rupee fluctuations. However, for domestic sales, the impact of the dollar Rupee movement is Challenging.

8. What kind of growth do you see coming in the residential sector demand?

The Indian Government has been very proactive in creating a very positive environment for the Residential Rooftop Solar market. The schemes announced and implemented and also under implementation are very generous and should ensure good participation by the Residential sector. MNRE’s grid-connected rooftop solar program is aiming for residential installation of 4 GW and offers a 40% subsidy for the first 3 kW of generation capacity in residential rooftop systems. Estimates suggest that Residential Rooftop installations are only 17% of total rooftop solar capacity and just 2.9% of the nation’s total solar capacity. Only around 0.5% of independent urban homes have installed rooftop solar which clearly shows the potential for Rooftop Solar in the residential sector. The major deterrents till now have been consumer inhibition and low awareness about the technical, financial, and operational aspects of installations, and the industry and Government are addressing this appropriately.

9. What are the cost and raw material challenges for solar modules and solar

China’s share in the entire supply chain – all stages from Polysilicon to Modules is in excess of 80% and for wafers is as high as 95% plus. Economies of scale, supply chain integration, innovation, and significant government support for the last 2 decades have made China a formidable force in the Solar Supply Chain. As a result, India like most other countries around the world is dependent on Chinese imports (wafers, cells, etc.) for Solar Module Manufacturing. This dependence does not augur well for the industry – always susceptible to disruption in availability and prices.

Our governments intentions through the PLI scheme is clearly to slowly and steadily move away from this dependence on Chinese imports by encouraging the Indian Industry to create a domestic fully integrated supply chain that is capable of effectively meeting the Domestic Demand.

10. Adani solar has expanded its business from manufacturing to retail distribution. What is the company’s strategy for the domestic market? Please explain.

Adani Solar PV modules should be available to every individual customer across the country. In keeping with this objective, Adani Solar has built out a very robust Retail Distribution network comprising over 20 Authorized Channel Partners, over 50 Resellers, and through these partners, a reach of over 2500 Integrators across the country.

Adani Solar is committed to serving the domestic market wholeheartedly.

11. Shed some light on Adani’s plans of developing domestic supply chain/backward integration including timeframe, investment etc.

The major setback faced by the Indian solar industry is the supply side constraints like the shortage of polysilicon, and glass, basically, the supply of raw materials required for the manufacture of cells and modules, increase in steel prices, aluminum, copper, silver, shortage of containers, freight spiral. India has no option but backward integrate and build capacity for manufacturing the whole spectrum of Solar PV supply chain domestically to mitigate the risks arising from the supply chain constraints.

Adani Solar has ambitious plans for the same. The backward integration at Adani solar will start with starting with 2GW Ingot, 2GW Wafer along with cumulative 4GW cell and 4GW module by January 2024. And by January 2026, we look forward to becoming a 10GW Fully integrated Solar PV manufacturer from Polysilicon to Module. To support this massive upscaling and integration,
we shall also develop a comprehensive ecosystem of ancillary units like Glass, EVA, Backsheet, etc. to reduce our import dependency and ensure a seamless supply of all the key raw materials.

What are some of the critical problems or obstacles in the power sector that need to be addressed?

Electrification and energy transition are two of the major drivers among many others for the power sector today. As we are advancing towards a carbon-neutral future, ensuring access to power for all, while bringing increasing the energy mix to include renewable energy is very crucial. The country is one of the highest consumers of energy with our energy consumption doubling almost every year. But we are taking commendable steps toward balancing economic growth with clean energy adoption. However, ensuring seamless integration of renewable power with a consistent supply of clean energy and fewer power outages and fluctuations is a huge challenge. Digitalization helps upgrade the infrastructure to improve power quality, cope with the integration of large-scale renewable energy, increase power monitoring and control, and also improve asset health.

What are some of the environmentally friendly initiatives taken by Hitachi Energy during the powering of rail/ metro segments of India?

Hitachi Energy is focused on advancing a sustainable energy future for all and views India as one of its top markets. We consistently work toward introducing sustainable solutions to our portfolio. One such example is the Dry-Type transformers. They are environmentally friendly and safe for usage in indoor or even crowded places. They are E2 C3 F1 compliant as per IEC60076-11 protocols. Often metro line networks face transient voltages leading to failure of transformer and interruption of metro train services. To protect the transformer from these over voltages surges, we have developed and installed Transient Voltage Protection systems in the transformer supplied to various metros.

Apart from this, sustainability and environment-friendly innovation are part of our mission. While supporting our customers and partner, we aim to achieve the milestone of carbon neutrality in our operations by 2030. Through our Sustainability 2030 plan and targets, we have reinforced our commitment to ‘Advancing a sustainable energy future for all and championing the urgency of a clean energy transition in India through innovation and collaboration.

1. What kind of changes do you see in the Industry after the BCD Implementation on Solar Panels?

The BCD Implementation on solar panels from 1 April 2022, in a move that would make imports costlier and encourage local manufacturing. The Indian market for solar components is dominated by Chinese firms now, the BCD will make it imported from China expensive. However, it has not found favor with the solar power project developers (SPPDs), as they are skeptical of the ability of domestic manufacturers to meet the present and future demand. Unless grandfathered around 15Gw of Solar Projects future is in jeopardy. Also increased tariff due to BCD will make solar power unattractive to DISCOMS.

2. How does the Dynamics of Price – Demand – Supply Looks Like for this and the next year?

Reported by PV InfoLink that in the market atmosphere of silicon materials in short supply, the order price under the long contract between large manufacturers may have a slight discount, but it is still difficult to stop the price median value from continuing to rise, the price of loose orders is higher and firmer, and “silicon material is difficult to find”. And the supply and demand situation of silicon material is not alleviated, especially for the new expansion of production capacity in the crystalline link, the price of silicon material in overseas origins continues to have a premium. It is not uncommon for prices to be higher than 280 yuan per kilo.

3. What Kind of Products and New Technologies you are going to launch in this or next year?

ZNShine will launch its new patented 1. BIPV (ZNShine Brick Steel Tile) and 2. Quick Installation System for Rooftop Mounting.

 1. ZNShine BIPV provides efficient solutions for better accommodate the panels onto the steel rooftop which will prolong the longevity for the steel-made rooftop as well as the panels during its production guaranteed period, and to lower down the installation and maintenance cost and speed up the construction.
 2. Quick Installation System for Rooftop Mounting provides better solutions for simplifying the complexity in the design and installation. It perfectly fits various rooftop types and reduces the installation cost and labor cost. No screw, no tools and maintenance free.

4. What kind of Pricing and Technology RoadMap do you see coming through in the Industry?

Below chart is the price for the solar grade silicon as of 8 June, 2022.

Below chart is the price for the Mono 210mm module as of 8 June, 2022. (BNEF)

1. How much Inverters have you supplied to India till now, what is the target/expectation in this year and next year

More than 1.8Gw+ Supplied in indian market & in current year we have planning to achieve target more than 1Gw+ and as per current order situation sofar solar will try to achieve more than 1Gw+ Inverter order in current year.

2. Please share your Road Maps – Pricing, Technology etc…

SOFARSOLAR is currently focused on increasing its core technology R & D investment in Grid connected inverters, Energy storage inverters and it’s charging pile. With this in mind, they aim to improve the competitive advantages of their core product range and provide further valuable service to their customer base. SOFARSOLAR installed inverter in Rooftop, Utility, Commercial filed. We have major installation in rooftop projects. New versions of Inverters which are very compact in size make SOFARSOLAR differentiate from others with upgraded GPRS, WiFi & ZERO EXPORT Facilities in Single & Three phase Inverter. We are offering best upgraded technology quality product with better solution on affordable prices premium products.

3. What are your views on BIS and other tariff barriers:-

Yes, we strongly recommending to go with BIS Certified inverter. I think it should be compulsory BIS certification in govt. tender otherwise no meaning of BIS implementation and waste of time & money from Manufacturers/OEM companies.

In some state ,specially KARNATAKA Govt.agency BESCOM have a different very funny policy for brand approval in BESOCM Approved list. As per conversation with BESCOM team they said we are not considering approval based on BIS Certification & IEC certification, means BIS Certification is no meaning for BESCOM. It’s same complain from other inverter companies also, requesting to Govt.agency need to prepare common policy for all states brand approval where is government agencies involved., specially for BIS Certification.

4. What are your views on Inverters – Make in India

Actually earlier we have decided, will try to develop Make in India inverter concepts for Indian market but in a now days its postponed due to Covid situation & will think out later for manufacturing. In a 2022 Year SOFARSOLAR is a very aggressive with new agenda for Business expansion with new innovative products & some up-gradation on current products. Sooner or later Make in India concept will apply for Indian market & it will more useful for local distributors, installers for easy on time availability with better prices. If local manufacturer follow process as per required testing facility , production facilities & required manpower to do complete manufacturing task with proper testing/quality process then customer will get proper worth products as per invested coast.

EQ In Exclusive Conversation With Mr. Sunil Badesra, Country Head, Sungrow India.

1. What do you think about these chip shortages and the demand-supply economics concerning inverters or any other components is there in short supply?

Not only chip shortage even other components which are getting utilised in the inverters are impacted globally. Definitely, there is a shortage in the market for the last one and a half years but now the situation is getting tougher and tougher every month and there is a lot of pressure on us to increase the pricing because the demand is huge in the market and supply is short. There is a slow down in the Indian market but in the overseas market, there is a huge demand for the products and when the demand is more and supply is short so you can understand the kind of pressure on the pricing front on the suppliers.

And now because of the Russia-Ukraine war the situation I getting even more worst for all industries, everyone is aware that if it doesn’t stop soon then we’ll see more impact on our industry as well. There is a shortfall and definitely, as one of the critical suppliers for this solar industry we are also facing the same challenge, however, the commitment we have given in the market and whatever we are giving right now in the market is based on the situation which is under control as of now. Right now, for Sungrow it is more or less manageable but, on the supply chain front, we are also facing the same pressure and soon we may see increase in prices in Inverter segments as well.

2. Now, Sungrow has a huge manufacturing capacity in India, which is more than 10 GW. So what were the factors inspired for this massive expansion and Make in India facility?

Four years back when we put up our 3 GW set up, we were expecting that maybe the Indian market will operate somewhere around 7-8 GW every year and that was happening but in the last couple of years we have seen that this figure has crossed even 9 GW. So, based on that if we calculate, this 3 GW setup was not sufficient for us and at the same time the kind of demand which is coming in the market not only in the inverter but also the storage front, we decided it is the right time to do the expansion. This is the reason why we are expanding this factory from 3 GW to 10 GW capacity. I’m sure that in case we are not able to utilise this 10 GW set up here, the extra capacity we can utilise to export the inverters to other countries as well.

3. You are trying to make India manufacturing not only a facility to supply to India but also to export. This is extremely interesting and something very good Sungrow is doing to India, we are excited to know more about which countries are you targeting to serve?

In the last four years, we have shipped around 15 gigawatts of the inverter from the Indian factory and that shipment has gone to the U.S. market and for other couple of projects we have supplied in Europe market as well. Also, the countries which are near to India such as Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh also we’re going to cover from this factory. Now, we are expanding the setup to 10GW, so we are also exploring Middle East market projects if we are left with some extra capacity.

4. This is extremely interesting that India’s factory will become so important in Sungrow’s overall manufacturing bases. Is there a plan to expand this beyond 10 GW capacity? Is there a road map in terms of capacity addition that is already set?

Yes, we are already exploring but not in terms of the capacity but the new products which we are launching in the Indian market. We have planned to add a robotic cleaning system, which maybe you’ll see in the next couple of years. We are planning to manufacture it locally and then sell it in the Indian market. In terms of capacity, there is no challenge, we can immediately increase it like this time we have done it in one year and it all depends on the demand which is coming from the market. If market demand is there then definitely we are always ready to increase the investment in India.

5. This is great to hear that Sungrow is not only expanding its product range in inverters but also in energy storage and robotic cleaning. I’m excited to know how the expansion is planned to cover more and more services from Sungrow, especially with respect to first energy storage and then robotic cleaning?

Let me give you a brief on how we’re planning with this 10 GW setup. The current setup of 3GW which we’re having is majorly the assembly. But in this 10 GW set-up expansion, the major thing is the SMT line which we’re putting in. It means all the PCBs which are getting used in the inverters are going to be local and the reason behind it is that there is the majority of the tenders, which are coming these days, are asking for their class-1 requirement which says that at least 50% local content should be there in the inverter. So, I think we will be the first company who is going to do this of having local SMT line for all range of products. In this 10 GW, we have done 4 GW is a string inverter then balance 6 GW is for the central inverters. Whatever the numbers I’m telling you, is based on the single shift, so you can understand, in case we run the factory in two or three shifts, that the capacity is going to get multiplied accordingly. The other products which we are planning is in the BESS. We have already closed a couple of storage projects in India on a bigger scale, 50 MWh+ and going forward we’re expecting that more and more storage projects are going to come in the Indian market.

We are hopeful that as soon as these projects actually starts execution on the ground so we are going to have all the electronics components which are used BESS solution like PCS we’re going to manufacture locally in India. Even we are also exploring the assemble battery cells locally, in case these things works out and can give some advantage to our customers. So, definitely we are ready to do the investment in that batteries as well and as I mentioned we are launching few other products like Robotic cleaning systems with the name of Sunpure and maybe in next couple of years we will set up new factory for that if demand remains there and will start supplying all the robotic cleaning system locally from Indian factory. We also have planned to come in EV segment so there also you will see some movement 6-7 months later.

6. Where do you see more traction, is it going to be more towards rooftop and distributed solar or is it going to be more towards the utility scale projects. I personally see big market towards the utility projects an but also ensure rooftop and distributed solar has going to be another opportunity of its own. So what are your views on where are we going to focus ourselves first?

In the inverters we have three segments, one is in residential and rooftop segment, then C&I and third one is utility. In residential segment, we are already doing storage from more than 20 years. Many Indian companies are there, already doing this in the form of off-grid solutions. In C&I segment, it is going to take more time because it is a bit more of price oriented segment so currently the pricing of batteries are bit higher. Indian market is not going to accept it very easily. I don’t think that in next two years anything is going to happen in C&I segment. Once EV and this utility scale picks up then we can expect some price corrections in the batteries and then C&I market may pick up. Same is with the residential market because it is currently driven by the Lead-acid batteries so, gradually the market will move towards the new technology which is coming in the batteries. I think, you are also aware that many GW scale of tenders are coming, so I hope that it will start moving in next couple of years. We are also preparing ourselves for that so that in advance there should not be any challenge in terms of the capacity.

7. Was India only chosen outside China or there are other manufacturing facilities in other areas of the world?

For Sungrow, India definitely was our first overseas factory. We already have one outside India and that is a very big set up and now we have opened up a factory in Thailand also. India has big potential which makes more sense to have the local set up here because Indian Government is also very clear to support the companies who are making the local investment and which cam comply the local requirements of the tenders like 50% local content in all the inverters. So, we have very clear intention and that was the reason why we set up the factory four years ago. We also made the announcement of 10GW Factory expansion about set up the factory way before the duty was announced.

8. As Sungrow is oldest company in making inverters and you’ve seen the photovoltaic market changing the need and the way we are producing, consuming or transmitting the renewable energy. Over these years of technological innovation and the changing needs of market, what are the expectations that this sector is having from Sungrow, to drive that research and development to keep Sungrow ahead of technological innovations. How is Sungrow reacting to the market how is it bringing the future like it has always been able to do?

Six years ago, when we entered in the Indian market, then only European suppliers were there. So, how were we able to make our position in Indian market? It was because of those solutions which we were offering to Indian customers at that time, 5-6 years ago. That time market was completely operating on a 4 MW block size in solar plant in utility scale. Then, we shifted that market from 4MW to 10 MW block size, where customers were able to save on BOS cost. So this is one of the major reason why this price tariff has been achieved which the IPPs are bidding today. Definitely, technology plays a very vital role in that. Later on, from 10 MW size, we made the solution for 12.5 MW. Worldwide, Sungrow was the only company who first made 10 MW size possible for customers than 12.5 MW and now 12.5 MW is in market from last four years.

Now, we are coming up with new product solutions. The new inverter range which we have started proposing to our customers which is going to give them some indirect benefits in terms of BOS or how they’re going to maintain the inverters over a period of 25 years so there are many things happening. I think over a period of six months you will see what different solutions we are offering in Indian market and then I’ll be in better situation to give you the detailed information on this frame but yes, this is about the block size inverter rating and secondly site initially 1000 Volt market was there then we shifted to 1500 Volt now a lot of R&Ds happening, where 2000 or 2100 Volt solutions are getting worked out. As an inverter supplier will be ready to provide the solution to meet the demand of the market in terms of the new technology which is going to come. Aside this, there are many other things happening, we’re working on R&D where we are planning to remove the transformer also so you can connect directly inverter output directly to the 33 KV align. Over a period of years you’ll see the new solutions which we’re going to offer in the market.

9. You’ve been in Sungrow since Sungrow India has started. As in solar industry., people shift from company to other company. So, what is it with you or with Sungrow that you’re hooked to it. What are those goodies which are making this team so loyal, strong and forward looking?

Yes, you are right that I have completed more than six years with Sungrow India. I was one of the initial team members who joined Sungrow in India. But yes, I’m not the only one, we have many other team members who have completed more than five years and supported in Sungrow journey in India. It’s basically not only the people who are working in company made us to reach at this level but the culture of the company has played a vital role in Sungrow’s success in India. People know that it’s a MNC but the best part is the freedom in decision-making this company has given to the local people. We have majority of the team members who are associated with Sungrow for more than five years. We think that it’s a big achievement which Sungrow has achieved today. If team is stable, product/service is stable and company is stable then definitely nobody can stop you to become leader in the market.

10. Tell us more about the factory, is it a state of art facility with theme of roboticsuser and automations. We will do a factory tour sometime but it will be interesting to hear from you that how proud are you about this facility?

In current 3GW setup, we are able to meet the 20% local content. In the new setup of 10 GW, we are definitely adding lot of machinery, which will be automatic and in some machineries, need the manual intervention. We will definitely invite you to visit, once the complete setup is ready so that you can witness the things and what kind of automation we’re going to do in this factory. This would be better when you take the real factory tour by visiting the factory that would be better but definitely yes we are adding many machinery which is going to be automatic because there are few things which if I have manual intervention there are more chances to have some quality compromise, which we never do. We’re going to completely automize the system.

11. I would love to see the sales chart, like in first year what did Sungrow achieve selling in India and then every year what are the projections?

So we started our journey in 2014, where we installed our first project for utility scale in Rajasthan. In 2017, we achieved 1 GW then in 2018 we crossed 3 GW shipment in India. Gradually, we are growing every year. Initially, it was a bit slow because acceptance of our make was bit challenging for customers but over a period of time they accepted our make and product. Now, every year we are adding four and a half GW of annual shipment. We have already shipped 12 GW of inverters to Indian market and I think we are the only company in inverter segment who has crossed 12 GW in India.

12. In inverter market how do you differentiate yourself? Why should customers consider Sungrow over other manufacturers?

A. This is one of the most asked questions. Why not others manufacturers who are offering the same ratings and Make in India inverters, then why should they buy Sungrow inverter. The reason is that, first, we’re a global company, which gives the reliability to the customers. You’ll find many other companies who are limited to specific countries or specific regions but Sungrow is accepted across the globe. Our products are accepted across the globe. Secondly, when it comes to the product the kind of solutions we are offering starting from residential, C&I to utility. There are few customers who buy utility scale of inverters, at the same time they also do rooftop projects also, so they want a company who can give them the complete solution. If they want to buy rooftop or if anything in utility scale. We are providing the complete solution. Now the third part, the major part which is very critical nowadays, the service, because this is a service driven industry so if service is not there than it is going to be a challenging situation for everyone.

So we are very proud on that because we have done a lot of analysis and study in the market. Also, Sungrow is the only company who have more than 35 on role engineers who are directly on the company’s payroll. We are very strong in service. Sometimes, any product can fail, even our inverters has also failed in the market and we have accepted that, but the best part is in case some challenges are coming in the market we accept that, we provide resolution to the customers because if problem comes and we back out and try to hide our face or we try to hide our news from the market that is not correct. So in case of any problem, we are accepting it and giving the solution to the customer. This is the reason why the most customers which we have are our repeated customers and giving us repeated orders. These are the major 3 core strength which Sungrow is carrying to be able to get the business in Indian market.

13. How much did Indian government has supported or encouraged you? What are the responses since you have set up? Government has been very vocal about the making India a manufacturing hub, so how does the frequency matching is happening with the government?

I have personally met to the MNRE team many times and mentioned the challenges we have faced in previous years. Also, we have been sharing feedbacks with them, continuously. Even today, we are facing challenges in the market which is related to the investment, what we have done in the market and the setup we have put up in Bangalore to make this 10 GW possible. So, the major challenge what we’re facing right now is that despite investing, we’re not getting expected support because especially in the rooftop segment there are, except Sungrow, no other company has Make in India inverters. Other Indian manufacturers are there, who are in Indian market for more than ten years and still they’re importing the inverters from other countries. So, this kind of support we are expecting from government, we were pushing them to impose the duty and definitely they have taken one step. Now, we are expecting that this duty should be increased so that the kind of infiltration which is still happening from outside could be stopped. Otherwise, the kind of investment we have done and the efforts we are putting in Indian markets, sometimes we lack the motivation. This is one of the major things which we are expecting.

Secondly, when we’re talking about the PLI, people are talking about PLI only in terms of modules. I have said multiple times that I understand the modules’ contribution in the any solar project is about 60% to 65% but inverter is also one of the major component which we cannot ignore alongwith the other BOS items. That kind of motivation is very important to the suppliers like us. It is not only as even for other inverter suppliers also even for other BOS components. This kind of scheme is not going to have much impact on us but if it comes in action then definitely it’s a kind of additional motivation. It will be like, government is thinking and have some attention on the inverter companies. Currently, we are just feeling that inverter is completely ignored by the government. Nobody talks about the inverter, it’s just ‘module’ talk. These are the major things, so any other additional benefits if government can give to the players who are making additional investment by fulfilling requirement or 50% local content. This is going to be additional motivating factor for us.

EQ In Exclusive Conversation With Mr. Honey Raza, Sales Head – Ginlong (Solis) Technologies – EQ Mag Pro https://www.eqmagpro.com/eq-in-exclusive-conversation-with-mr-honey-raza-sales-head-ginlong-solis-technologies-eq-mag-pro/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=eq-in-exclusive-conversation-with-mr-honey-raza-sales-head-ginlong-solis-technologies-eq-mag-pro Fri, 11 Feb 2022 11:44:15 +0000 https://www.eqmagpro.com/?p=269622

Q.1 What is Ginlong Solis’s highest commissioned capacity in India?

At present in utility we are having 70MWs plant which is getting part commissioned in Assam. Considering the rooftop installation we have various 8MW to 10MW plants which are running very well across various geographies of India. Total capacity is now 2GW with more than 1 lakhs of inverters supplies so far. Globally we have supplied 20GW+ shipments.

Q.2 What new products will Solis introduce to its Indian customers? What are the key products introduced in India Renewable Leadership Summit?

Recently we have launched our off grid product in the range of 4k – 5k. These product are the having top notch design which can support Solar PV, Grid or any other generation source and External Battery pack. It can operate in conditions where there is no grid at all and can also be used to optimize the overall system efficiency by drawing minimum power from grid with no export. Another advantage for these products is the compatibility with both Lead Acid and Li-on batteries with a variety of battery brands . Product is also having the most required feature of one click fast charging. It Supports 1PH Parallel Connection- Support max 1p units parallel connection on 1PH System & Support 3PH Parallel Connection- which Support Balanced/Unbalanced parallel connection on 3PH System. Max total 10 units per system.

Q.3 Will EVs become a viable choice for mass adoption in the absence of cheaper energy storage technologies?

I think with the new policy liberalization on EV Charging stations from the central government, the flexibility of setting up the EV charging station shall be eased which is a step closer towards mass adaptation. Also I am counting on the PLI schemes to make a sustainable eco system for energy storage technologies.

Q.4 Which technology, in your opinion, will lead the solar inverter industry in the future?

I still perceive Grid Tied segment to perform well as compared to other technologies. The reason is evident from the fact that the current storage capacity is limited also the technology is already proven one. The rooftop has great penetration because of various support reasons be it a land or system’s modularity. Simultaneously Utility projects are very well adoption the string inverters which can provide better efficiency and optimize the overall O&M cost. This translates in lowering the LCOE cost of the plants.

Q.5 What is the highest rate of Solis inverter performance? Do these inverters perform equally well in all weather conditions?

All the inverters from Solis are tested under extreme test conditions like temperature test like heat run or extreme cold conditions. Solis Inverters are designed to endure these climatic extremities. We have experience of working in most toughest terrains or the world. Parallelly we are regularly sharing our knowledge sharing segment where installers and end users can get to know the best practices for handling such equipment.

Q.6 Do you detect any significant distinctions between the Indian and other large markets when it comes to inverters? What do you consider to be your most significant market challenge?

India has done very well last year in 2021 if you compare with US or Australia. Europe, Brazil and China Domestic market is still doing well which has support us in overall better revenues. We expect there would be a slight slowdown in Q1, 2022 due to the expect BCD on modules announcement but despite this I am bullish on the total installation to be done this year. Certainly, it would take some time to overcome this taxation change. Overall around increase of 30% capacity as compare to last year, would be figure which would be decent one.

Q.7 Can you tell us about Ginlong Solis’ response to the COVID19 pandemic, the following lockdown, and any financial consequences?

During the reporting period, COVID-19 brought some inevitable pressure and challenges to Ginlong Solis. However, the company’s capacity rapidly recovered increased to seize more domestic and foreign market share through the positive response of the company.” Ginlong Solis pointed in the announcement that due to the recent rapid recovery of overseas market demand, the shareholders of listed companies will increase significantly during the reporting period.

As a leading manufacturer of string inverters, Ginlong Solis has achieved steady growth in recent years. In Q3 of last year the company reported its strongest ever quarter. Yiming Wang, the president of Ginlong Solis, said that the company has launched some new products since Q3 of 2019. At the same time, the company promoted sales in traditional and emerging markets with marketing channels and marketing teams. Solis expansion into overseas markets continues to increase with the growth of Ginlong Solis’s overseas offices, the company’s product improvements, new technology response and competitive prices. As a result, , Ginlong Solis boosted its global market share.

In Q3 of 2020, since there is no time limit for pre-installation of residential systems, the average monthly installation numbers continue to grow. Sales of commercial inverters are growing rapidly as component and system costs continue to come down. “We expect several markets may exceed 1GW each year, and there will be a gradual improvement over time as installations accumulate and years of use grow.

Q.8 What are your plans in India over the next two years? Is there anything new you’re intending to release in the first half of 2022?

We are aggressive about the India market and so is the response. We are very strong in residential and C&I with the total installation, that’s why we are the No 1 Solar Inverter Company of India, and achieved almost 80% growth as compared to last years overall. Projects with our utility product of 255k picking up very fast with total installation around 300MW by FY 2021. Next two years we are planning to achieve 80% to 90% growth. This year we are also in process to launch many more products in storage and Utility segments. Utility product shall be of higher capacity than our present product with more advanced features.
